FAQS

Have questions?

How is VAM different from other trans voice training programmes?

Most programmes give you a target and exercises to repeat until you reach it — but the vocal organ is largely outside your direct conscious control, so instructing it to produce a different sound rarely produces lasting results. VAM works by creating precise conditions that cause the voice to activate the desired coordination naturally. Jimmy listens to your voice with precision, identifies exactly what needs to develop, and constructs tonal patterns calibrated specifically to your voice — you execute the patterns, the voice responds, and the coordination consolidates into reliable habit. No generic exercises, no universal programme — precise, systematic work built entirely around how your voice actually functions.

Will I actually hear a difference in my first evaluation session?

Most clients do — if your voice can already change volume, shift pitch, and move through different resonance positions, it has the baseline function VAM needs to activate the desired coordination within the session itself. If those foundational functions are underdeveloped, the session still produces results, but the training builds those functions first before moving forward. Either way, the evaluation gives you something most training never provides — a precise picture of exactly where your voice is and what the path forward requires. What you leave with is clarity: not a promise, not a pitch, but an honest map of your voice and what committing to the work would involve.

What happens at the end of the evaluation session?

Jimmy walks you through exactly what he heard — where your voice is functioning well, where the gaps are, and what the path forward requires. You will receive a clear, honest assessment of your starting point and a specific recommendation for which programme is the right next step. There is no pressure and no pitch — if VAM is not the right fit, you will be told directly. What you leave with is complete clarity on your voice, the work involved, and what committing to it would actually mean.

Why does the first training commitment have to be two months?

The voice does not consolidate new behaviours in a single session — and starting without enough time produces exactly the kind of unstable results most clients have already experienced elsewhere. Two months is the minimum window required for foundational vocal coordination to develop, stabilise, and begin moving toward reliable habit. Committing to less time is not a smaller version of the same result — it is an incomplete process. The two-month minimum exists to protect the integrity of the work and the reliability of what you take away from it.

I have tried other programmes and my progress didn't hold. Can VAM help?

In most cases, yes — and the reason progress did not hold is almost always the same. Most programmes teach target behaviours directly without developing the underlying function that makes those changes stable, so the moment attention shifts, the voice reverts. VAM creates the precise conditions that cause the voice to develop the coordination itself — and when that is trained systematically, it does not disappear when you stop thinking about it. If your progress has slipped away before, the issue was not your voice. It was the starting point.

What if I have never done any voice training before?

VAM works with voices at every stage, including those with no prior training at all. Beginning without prior training can actually be an advantage — you arrive without compensations built around incorrect instructions or the frustration of progress that repeatedly failed to hold. The evaluation session assesses your voice exactly as it is, not against a standard of where you should be. Whether you are completely new or have trained for years, the process is the same: understand the function, build the foundation, activate the coordination, consolidate the result.

How long does trans voice training take?

For most clients, meaningful and reliable change develops over three to six months of consistent training — though some hear significant shifts within the first few sessions. The timeline depends on where your voice is starting from and how consistently you commit to the work. What VAM can tell you after the evaluation is where your voice currently sits and a realistic picture of what progress looks like for your specific voice. Progress in voice training is not linear, but when the method is built around how the voice actually functions, it is predictable.

Can trans voice training produce permanent results?

Yes — when training is built around developing vocal function rather than rehearsing target behaviours. A voice trained through VAM changes because the underlying coordination has been systematically developed until it becomes the new default — not because you are consciously performing a sound. That kind of change does not require ongoing maintenance the way surface-level techniques do. A voice given enough time to fully consolidate its new coordination does not go back — it simply becomes your voice.

What is the difference between trans voice training and speech therapy?

Speech therapy is a clinical discipline designed to restore function to a voice that has been disrupted by pathological conditions. Trans voice training is a developmental discipline — it works with a voice that is functioning normally and develops new coordination and resonance to produce a voice that feels authentically yours. VAM sits closer to elite conservatory vocal training than to clinical speech therapy, applying the same foundational principles singers train with to the specific goals of gender-affirming voice work. The distinction matters because the method, the goals, and the expected outcomes are fundamentally different.

Is trans voice training online effective?

Yes — and for the way VAM works, the medium makes very little difference to the outcome. VAM is built around listening: identifying what is happening in your voice, constructing the precise patterns that activate the desired coordination, and guiding you through them in real time. That process does not require physical presence — it requires precision, and precision is available in any medium where sound can be heard clearly. Many VAM clients train entirely online and achieve results fully consistent with those working in person.

How much does trans voice training cost?

VAM offers programmes at several levels of investment, designed to meet different stages of readiness and commitment — from the complimentary guide at no cost, through the book, digital courses, and ten-day masterclass, to private one-on-one coaching at the highest level. Specific pricing is available on the relevant programme pages. If you are unsure which level is right for you, the evaluation session is the most direct way to find out. It gives you a clear picture of where your voice is and which investment level makes sense for where you want to go.
